The Craziest Celebrity Prenuptial Agreements

Do celebrity prenuptial agreements ever achieve anything other than attention? In many cases, yes they do. Prenups are meant to protect the assets that you had before entering into marriage, so that you still have them afterwards. Here are some of the craziest celebrity prenups; some that worked and some that didn’t.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck would have been fined $5 million if he had cheated on Jennifer Lopez, and $1 million for lying, but they broke up before he could do either one.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

Katie Holmes came out of her marriage to Tom Cruise with a $15 million settlement, plus $3 million for every year they were married, and $400,000 a year in child support. Not too shabby.

Mariah Carey and James Packer

Mariah Carey found her prenup so insulting that she called off her engagement to billionaire businessman James Packer. Packer agreed to giving Carey $1 million per year they were married. She complained and negotiated to $6 million, however Packing insisted she had to relinquish her unlimited credit card use and use of private planes for her and her children. No thanks, she said.

Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold

Roseanne Barr didn’t want to have a prenup. She was marrying for love. In fact, she was angry at her attorneys for the suggestion and fired them when they insisted. She lost out, though, because after her divorce from Tom Arnold four years later, he got $50 million because they didn’t have an agreement.

Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas

This much loved Hollywood couple have been married for 16 years. According to their prenup, Catherine gets $2.8 million for every year she was married to Douglas, and extra $5 million bonus if she caught Douglas cheating. Yikes!

A good prenuptial agreement, drawn up with the help of a lawyer, can be a very useful tool for protecting your assets.
